SSD stands for Solid State Drive, and unlike normal hard drives which have a mechanical arm to read data from platters, SSD's store data in microchips, much like a USB memory stick does. This difference makes the SSD much faster - its doesn't require a moving arm to get information.
Most Macs made within the last 8 years will qualify to upgrade to an SSD. If you own a Unibody MacBook Pro then you may have the option to replace your Optical or DVD drive with a caddy that allows you to install an extra drive in addition to your regular HD. If this option is available to you then you could opt for a small SSD for use as a superfast system and then keep all your data on your existing drive.
